چکیده

Reactive fluid flow and geochemical transport in unsaturated fractured rocks have received increasing attention for studies of contaminant transport, groundwater quality, waste disposal, acid mine drainage remediation, mineral deposits, sedimentary diagenesis, and fluid-rock interactions in hydrothermal systems. This paper presents methods for modeling geochemical systems that emphasize: (1) involvement of the gas phase in addition to liquid and solid phases in fluid flow, mass transport, and chemical reactions; (2) treatment of physically and chemically heterogeneous and fractured rocks, (3) the effect of heat on fluid flow and reaction properties and processes, and (4) the kinetics of fluid-rock interaction. The physical and chemical process model is embodied in a system of partial differential equations for flow and transport, coupled to algebraic equations and ordinary differential equations for chemical interactions. For numerical solution, the continuum equations are discretized in space and time. Space discretization is based on a flexible integral finite difference approach that can use irregular gridding to model geologic structure; time is discretized fully implicitly as a first-order finite difference. Heterogeneous and fractured media are treated with a general multiple interacting continua method that includes double-porosity, dual-permeability, and multi-region models as special cases. A sequential iteration approach is used to treat the coupling between fluid flow and mass transport on the one hand, chemical reactions on the other. Applications of the methods developed here to variably saturated geochemical systems are presented in a companion paper (part 2, this issue).

Hydrothermal Fluid Flow and Mineral Alteration in a Fractured Rock under Multiphase

The geochemical evolution of hydrothermal fractured rock systems occurs through a complex interplay of multi-phase fluid and heat flow, and chemical transport processes. On the basis of previous work we present simulations of reactive hydrothermal flow that include (1) detailed fracture-matrix interaction for fluid, heat and chemical constituents, (2) gas phase participation in multiphase fluid...

Numerical simulation of non-isothermal multiphase tracer transport in heterogeneous fractured porous media

We have developed a new numerical method for modeling tracer and radionuclide transport through heterogeneous fractured rocks in a non-isothermal multiphase system. The model formulation incorporates a full hydrodynamic dispersion tensor, based on three-dimensional velocity ®elds with a regular or irregular grid in a heterogeneous geological medium. Two di€erent weighting schemes are proposed f...

Numerical Simulation of Single-Phase and Multiphase Non-Darcy Flow in Porous and Fractured Reservoirs

A numerical method as well as a theoretical study of non-Darcy fluid flow through porous and fractured reservoirs is described. The non-Darcy behavior is handled in a three-dimensional, multiphase flow reservoir simulator, while the model formulation incorporates the Forchheimer equation for describing single-phase or multiphase non-Darcy flow and displacement. The non-Darcy flow through a frac...

An Integrated Modeling Approach for Characterizing Multiphase Flow, Chemical Transport, and Heat Transfer in Fractured Reservoirs

Even with the significant progress made in modeling flow and transport in fractured rock in the last few decades, characterizing fractured reservoirs remains a great challenge. This is because of the inherent complexity within actual fractured reservoirs, from multiphase flow and transport to the spatial variability of the fracture network. To investigate coupled processes of fluid and heat flo...

TOUGHREACT Version 2.0: A simulator for subsurface reactive transport under non-isothermal multiphase flow conditions

TOUGHREACT is a numerical simulation program for chemically reactive nonisothermal flows of multiphase fluids in porous and fractured media, and was developed by introducing reactive chemistry into the multiphase fluid and heat flow simulator TOUGH2 V2. The first version of TOUGHREACT was released to the public through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Science and Technology Software Cente...
